Because of his key role in the design of the Mapungubwe Interpretive Center in South Africa, awarded with e.g. the David Alsop Sustainability Award at the 2009 IStructE Structural Awards and named "World Building of the Year" at the 2009 World Architectural Festival, John Ochsendorf was invited for the Design Triennial 2009 “Why Design Now?".
MIT's Masonry Research Group and ODB Engineering have built the vaulted installation "Vault201" using bricks made out of 100% post-consumer waste.
